Jennifer Heath '99

Jennifer Heath ’99

In the fall, Oglethorpe Alumna Jennifer Heath ’99 joined the race for Brookhaven Mayor. Through my internship at Pegasus, I had the opportunity to personally meet Heath and learn more about her candidacy and time here at Oglethorpe.

Interviewing Heath introduced me to the world of local politics and the opportunities I can explore with my both my Communications major and Politics minor. I’ve always had an interest in politics, but I didn’t know what part of politics interested me most. Through this experience, I’ve learned details about the ins and outs of the Public Relations side of political campaigning. I, now, know that this is something I’d love to explore in my professional career.

Because the candidate is an Oglethorpe Alumna, the 2019 Brookhaven Candidates Forum was hosted in the Turner Lynch Campus Center here on campus. Through my work at Pegasus, I was put in contact with the managing editor of Reporter Newspaper, John Ruch, who invited me to attend the forum as the timekeeper.

An at-capacity crowd from the Brookhaven community gathered at Oglethorpe’s Turner Lynch Campus Center on Oct. 16 for a candidate forum sponsored by The Brookhaven Reporter Newspapers.

This experience was new to me, but I was able to learn the ins and outs of local political debates and different issues and debatable topics facing the City of Brookhaven. At the debate, I was introduced to the current Mayor of Brookhaven, John Ernst, and the candidates running for City Council, Dimitrius Owens and Madeleine Simmons.

This opportunity would not have been possible if not for my internship at Pegasus, and it completely changed my perspective on local politics and all that I have the chance to pursue with my degree here at Oglethorpe.
