One of the perks of working for a communications department is having access to a four terabyte hard drive full of pictures taken at university events. In my time here I’ve found pictures of rooms I didn’t know existed, events I’d forgotten about, and, much to my chagrin, several of myself. Yesterday, when returning to the office from a meeting, I was horrified to find this gem which my boss was so courteous enough to print off in full color for all the office to see.

IMG_2003-1440138489-OSeeing myself in the horribly awkward, braces filled, and sweaty light of my first move-in day nearly four years ago jogged my memory, and I decided to take a quick second between tasks today to look through the folder. It was both hilarious and a little bittersweet to look through pictures of myself and all of my friends from move-in day so long ago. Reflecting back on all the good and bad times we’ve shared through the years and the friendships we’ve made; those that have left Oglethorpe, those that have drifted apart, and those that have endured to this day. It made me realize how far we’ve all come, and stress a little bit less about how far we all still have to go.

The thing that is so great about working in this office is the fact that your supervisors always seem to have trust in your ability to do something. If you had told me three years ago that I would be expected to do what I do every day now, I would have called you crazy. I had no idea how to write a story, how to create a web page, or how to edit a video. But now I realize that things aren’t so hard and scary, you just have to be willing to learn.
